I was reconsidering the Allis 175 that jumps out of third gear to get the advantages of this series tractor. Does anyone know what exactly has to be done to fix third gear? This is the only gear it jumps out of. I was also wondering what it would cost in parts and how long it would take me. I have an A frame and a chain hoist along with a skid steer, a bottle jack, blocks, etc. Are there any special tools required to make this fix? What am I looking at in doing this repair (any surprises or challenges)? I have split tractors before and taken apart ford Dual power assemblies, so I know what I'm doing inside of a tractor. Any other tips are certainly welcome. The dealer wants 5500, what do you think I could talk him down to? I was hoping maybe 4500, since there is a lot of labour and expensive parts involved in the repair, or maybe if he agrees to buy all the parts? Let me know what you think.

I didn't have any luck on the manual. I have an IT on WC, WD, WD-45, D-14, D-15, D-17, D-19, D-21, 210, 160, 180, 185, 190, 190XT. But I couldn't find one for the 170, 175. Anyway, I'd just put it in Neutral and take the shifter cover and forks off. Jimbe suggests it be in 2nd gear when you do this. Don't know if that makes it easier - never tried it that way.

I'll send you exploded views of the D-17 transmission if it will help.

put trans in the 2nd gear. remove bolts holding shift cover to trans. the 3-4 is the rail that will pull out without removing any bolts from shift rail. keep a rag over the holes above the rail as you remove it. there are spring loadedballs under the rail. anyway the detent balls fit into grooves in rail. what you must do is to move the one for 3rd so it goes about 1/16 farther into gear. also make the groove somewhat deeper. may not be 1oo% but it has fixed an awfull pile of them especialy on that model. good luck

My evaluator says a 1975 175 is worth $4289 in fair condition. Less repairs, they say:
Premium $6,191
Good $5,337
Fair $4,289
$4500 seems about right because you'll probably put $1000 into putting in the new gears or shift forks or both. Plus, this will be a lot of work. I'd say you could tell him it's worth $5500 when fixed. If he fixes it, you will buy.

Did yours jump out of gear too? If so, which one(s) and how bad was it. (To anyone who knows)Is it possible to use a tractor that jumps out of 3rd for a little while until it can be fixed, or will it possible damage something else? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hurst, I've never owned a 175. But I have had an Allis CA that had this problem. I fixed it by buying new forks that pushed the gears together better. My cost was $45. This is a fairly common problem for Allis tractors. If I pull really hard in 2nd gear on my D-17, it occasionally will jump out of 2nd. You can use the tractor indefinitely with this problem but you won't have 3rd gear. It won't hurt the tractor. I believe that the 170 and 175 transmissions are pretty similar to the D-17 and may even be the same. The setup is similar. They have constant mesh spur gears and the shift is accomplished by a slider that meshes on the edge of the gear. It is the slider that wears if it isn't engaged completely. Repair would involve repacing the slider and the the third gear. You could check with your local Agco dealer to see how much these parts cost. Because my CA was so much older, Agco didn't have many parts left and reqired that I buy two gears (they'd changed the ratio so I needed two) to make the fix and wanted $750 for them. A new fork might solve the problem but you won't know until it is apart.

Can the fork be replaced through the side pannel (or some other plate that can be removed) instead of splitting the tractor down? If I have to split it down, where do I split and do I have to remove all the final drives, 3pt, etc,? Thanks for your help so far. I e-mailed a dealer near me asking about the problem, so hopefully I will get an e-mail tom. If I understand correctly, the only gear that has to be replaced is the one with the worn splines and the slider assembly? Even if the ratio of the new gear is the same, would there be a possibility of a minor measurment error, like with pistons, where I would need both gears from the same set? thanks again for the help.

The D-17 shift assembly comes out the top of the transmission. I think (but don't know for sure) that the 175 is the same. I'll look for my manual today.
