I bought my first wd at an auction I am haveing problems putting it in any gear. I put the tractor in the barn an I took the shifter housing off. the shifter forks look straight not bent but when I move the shifter around nothing really seems to move freely. what should I be looking for? do I have to take the forks apart an look at the shifter by the ball? also where can I get a good manual? on this site? thanks

I had the same problem after my tractor had set unused for a while . When I pulled the shift tower, I found that the sliding gears had frozen to the shaft ( fluid level was low). After a little easy tapping and lubrication everything moved and after reassembly, it shifted fine.

Does the shifter move around but doesn"t move the forks. If so you need to build up the end of the shifter so it will stay in the slot at the top of the forks. you can get the shifter out of the housing by taking the boot and sliding it up and there is a c-clip hoding everything in when you remove it there will be with a WD I believe 2 keyways one on each side with a WD 45 I believe there is only one of these keys.

Close but no cigar! The WD has a single keyway with the round pin with the square end. WD45 has two of them, opposite each other. You can take a WD tower and drill straight through to use it on a WD45, with the second pin to line up the shifter lever. Need the curved shifter with the second keyway.

JMS, I have a 1953 WD45(for sure) with a "one hole keyway" tower and a curved shifter with one keyway, is this "normal" or a mutation? Thanks for any help.

What is the serial number? OFFICIALLY, the WD45 started at 146xxx something, while late WDs had the new tranny and shifter. I went to the local dealer a few years ago for parts for a Gleaner corn head, and had the exact head where the company said they made the split between one type and another- but the parts were different than what the book said. Dealer said AC was not always 'that' fussy on serial number breaks. Seemsn like they used up a few extra parts when they were putting them together.

Serial is 1495xx. Yes, I think AC may have done it or a previous owner had it "fixed'. Thanks again for the input!
