I am tring to time a late 30s AC B. I am not sure about a couple of things. What is the mark on the fly wheel going to be? I can see a word but can not read it. Is top dead center going to be the only thing marked on the fly wheel? Also which cylinder is #1? Thank you

front cylinder is #1, by radiator. timing hole is on left side center of flywheel housing, 1 inch hole. should be a TDC or TOP mark on the flywheel. there may be a FIRE mark, maybe not. it has a mag so make it fire at the TDC mark when static. the impulse will get you to the FIRE after running. if you hand crank you will need it to fire TDC to get it so it dont kick. roll motor slowly to the TDC and you can here the mag "snap" when it fires. you can pull the #1 wire or look in the cap to see that you are on the right wire if you are way off. if it runs and you are just checking, listen for the SNAP as you roll slowly.

I looked at the flywheel again. It looks like fire comes first on the compression and then a word that looks like center. Does this make sense? I took the valve cover off so that i could see exatly what it was doing and everything looks right and it sparks the plug and I look in the hole and its on a word that looks like center.
thanks

Hi,

Yes, the CENTER mark is the same as TDC. That's where you want the mag to snap assuming you are on the compression stroke of #1 cylinder. If you ever check it with a timing light when the engine is running, you want to use the FIRE mark, which should be 30 deg crank rotation before the CENTER mark.
