What is the difference between these two tractors. I see that the 175 has about 8 more hp than the 170, but how is that? Is it done just by turning up the injection pump, if so, could you do the same to a 170 and get the hp? Also, are both of these tractors equipped with mechanical power directors? Are these models good and reliable machings, and are perkins motors easy to get parts for and work on? Also, is there anything that can go wrong on these tractors? Thanks for all your help in advance.

The AC 170 diesel used the Perkins 236 engine whereas the 175 used the Perkins 248.

The 175 ran at a higher rpm to get the extra hp. I imagine the fuel limit was higher also. Perkins engines are used in MF tractors and parts are pretty easy to get.

The 175 and 185 were known as crop hustlers. They were built using the idea that to increase productivity, instead of pulling a bigger implement, you pull the same size implement one gear faster. the 175 is basically a "super 170", same as is the 185. This idea obviously worked because the 185 and 175 phased out the 170 and 180 in about 3 years.Funny thing is the 180 and 185 used a 190 engine and torque tube, but D17 IV trans and final drives. If you research it, the 180 and 185 is the same bore as the 190, just cut the fuel down.

As far as reliability, i think they are a good tractor. The 170 diesel is actually shorter than the d17 diesel, as the 170 had the 4 cylinder perkins in it and the d17 and d262 which was a 6 cylinder. Parts are avaliable, as alot of people used this perkins engine, including Massey. the 175 used a bigger perkins if I am not mistaken. The later 170 and 175 had a redone front axle and they moved the hyd pump from the belt pulley drive to the front of the engine, directly driving it off the crankshaft. power director is mechanical

Just looked in the book last night. At first they used the 236 perkins at a higher rpm, but afterward they switched to the 248 perkins
