Have a front seal leak on my new WD after it warms up. Ordered new one. But how hard is the removal and any replace techniques? Supposedly overhauled 3 to 4 years ago, why leaking so soon? Dennis

Make sure you get a light lithium grease and just rub on the new seal. Seals need lubrication or its like starving an engine of oil that could be a reason why it went bad in just a couple years and could have been a reason or two that those other guys told you! -Tyler

If the shaft is grooved you may want to install a speedy sleeve.

I haven't tried removing the seal from below but I think it can be done.

Loosen up the hand crank starter bracket. Loosen the fan/generator belt. Remove the bolt holding the pulley to the crankshaft. The bolt is located on the side of the pulley and has a lock nut.

You might have to get a gear puller in there to pull the pulley. Last two I remove during overhaul came off easily.

Good luck.

Seal should be pressed into the front cover, not hammered in. Centering the cover on reinstall is important, but would be extremely difficult to do without removing the radiator. Should be tightened down to the engine before taking any vertical load which throws it off center.
