I've got a 39' WC w/ a belly hydraulic unit that runs off bottom PTO....for years I've been using 30W oil to top my pump off...it has never given me any trouble...today, I did infront of one of my friend while pulling firewood...he told me I was going to damage my pump? This true? If so, why no damage in last 40yrs?

Josh, I have a hyd unit that runs off of the belt pulley. Tag on the side of the tank says" Use 30 WT oil only, do not use hydraulic fluid". Haven't got it cleaned and mounted yet but someday. Roger

I don't think it is true. In the 50's, 30 weight non detergent was commonly used as hydraulic fluid. If you haven't had any problems in 40 years, I think that speaks for itself. Not all hydraulic fluids are the same. Some have very little lubricating quality. Others have a bunch. 30 weight has a bunch. I've been using it in my D-17 for the last 12 years without a problem. Pump works a lot better now than it did when I bought the tractor!
