pto bearing cage shims

Took off the pto bearing cage on my wd 45 to fix a leaky oil seal. There are eight .01 inch thick shims between the bearing cage and the pto housing. Is this the normal amount or is every tractor different?? The service manual doesn't say how many to use.

These shims are used to adjust the shaft end play. I can't remember if you take them out to tighten the bearings or put in more. If you have it apart, it should be obvious which it is. The shaft should turn freely but you should not detect any shaft movement. Usually Allis arranged it so the most shims were needed when new so you could just remove one or more when servicing used. If you don't get these shims right, your seal life will be reduced.

I just did the final drive seals on my D-17. There were three shims on one bearuing set and 4 on the other. I removed them one at a time each time tightening up the bearings and checking the rotation. I actually ended up removing all of the shims on both sides.
