I think I know the answer already but will throw this out to others. I traded my "68 Massey for a diesel '71 170 AC. Very happy with the bigger tractor but now have Cat 1 implements with a bigger Cat 2 hitch. I understand the HP ratings on the PTO and gear box ratings on my most needed implement - the mower. I should be okay there but I obviously still can"t attach my Cat 1 mower to my Cat 2 hitch without some mods (larger hitch pins, wider brackets). I also have a Cat 1 grader blade and box scraper which I"m hoping to keep/use. Don"t have to worry about HP here but the width of the implement is a problem. My question (finally) - is there some kind of bracket I can purchase that will allow me to easily attach these implements to my new heavier Cat 2 hitch or do I have to go out and purchase Cat 2 implements. Suggestions are appreciated.

You'll need to find a pair of Category I sway blocks for your 170. They are thinner than the standard Cat.II ones. I've a set of each for my AC 180, I've a mix of I & II equip. I'm sure they're the same as for 170. I think a person could make the Cat I's from 3/4" thick steel, and drilling a 5/8" hole in the right spot. After that as others have said you'll need the adapter bushing for CAT I to II

If you don"t want to mess with adapters or a quick hitch, you could just replace the cat 1 pins with cat 2 pins.

I agree with JMS/MN. You simply need the small sleeves. You could go buy enough that you would leave them on all implements and have no inconvenience. Or you could have one set and move them with the tractor. You could make these as well. I think a 3/4" pipe could be bored to the correct ID and turned to the correct OD. Don't hold me to this. Check it out first.

For a buck and a half a pin you can't do much turning.

The upper link pin is 3/4" for category 1 and about an inch for category 2. The lower link pins are 7/8" for category 1 and 1-1/8 for category 2.

The implement frame for category 1 is narrower than the frame for category 2. So if the implement sway is controlled by internal sway blocks they need to be thinner for category 1 than for category 2. On my JD 4020 its a matter of changing their position. From thick to thin. I did that last night. A double ended double sized lower lift pin is just right on a category 2 implement showing category 2 to the outside and category 1 to the inside, providing the rub blocks let the arms go closer than category 1 spacing to get the implement mounted. Which won't work on my 4020 without removing the rubbing blocks completely.

I don't know what provisions the 170 has but since its younger than the 4020 it should be at least as adjustable. If not, maybe that's why there were so many 4020 sold compared to AC tractors.

For the most part, this site lacks acrimony.

Will be plenty of that when we puts the sleeves on the pins, if the pins are too short to reach through his lift arms, then has to cut them off and mount new longer ones that fit perfect, after he ran down to TSC and came back with sleeves, no pins. Then has to go back and get pins. A vicious circle. Next winter or so, the back blade.

Got plenty of friends that got married in holy acrimony if that helps.

Mark, I was referring to your comment about the 4020 not your comments about the sleeves. I use some cat I equipment on my Case 800 - namely a post hole digger. The spacing between the lift arms is a problem but I can get it to work. I only dig a half dozen holes a year. Ingenuity can save considerable time and expense when small problems are presented. What I'm saying is that a simple way can be found to overcome the issue if it is an occasional need. Perhaps not if it a bigger need.

Oh I absolutely agree. In most cases can run down to TSC or where ever and get sleeves and problem solved. I agree. But in some cases, and at least newer Deere is notorious for this, the pins for their Cat 1 hitched impliments (5' back blades, 5' mower, etc) just barely clear through the bushings on the swing arms of their smaller tractors (compacts). I'm thinking that they're doing that so that ya gotta buy new stuff with bigger tractors, if it's green. I picked up a 950 Yanmar Deere from a friend going through a divorce for cheap (the tractor, not the divorce), and it came with a green back blade and mower that won't fit nothin else unless I re-pin them with longer pins, and I aint gonna bother - they fit that tractor, so they stay with that tractor, and when I decide to sell it, will go with it.

I'm thinking older stuff, and after market stuff comes with longer pins that will work fine with bushings. You're right for the most part, and I agree. That little green might just be an exception.

The little sleeve adapters is all you have to have, but if all your equipment is Cat 1, a Cat 1 quick hitch sure would be nice. Then you wouldn't have to mess with the adapters and you could hitch and unhitch from the seat of the tractor. I'm just lazy enough that I sure like them.

There are sleeves for the category 1 pins to fit category 2 links.

My JD 4020 has different positions for the lower link rubbing blocks so it can be used for category 1. I just made that change a couple hours ago, so I am sure it works.

I don't know what your tractor has for that but being that its not a lot larger than a category 1 tractor, a smart three point would be convertable.

There are also double ended implement pins that can be put in category 2 equipment to use 2 on the outside and 1 on the inside.

get a cat 2 pin for the plow or get a longer cat 1 pin and a sleeve to make it the dia of a cat 2. you can buy the pins at any farm supply store.

These pins are welded to the frame of the plow. Have you ever heard of grinding the ball on the end of the 3pt arm to accomodate the shorter pin?

i don't think i would recommend it. i would think that would make it easier for the ball to come out, not nessesarily when hooked up to anything but when not hooked up. i guess i really don't have an answer to that. if it were my own unit i'd get my hands on a torch and cut them pins out and put in pins that have nuts on instead of a weld.
