wd 45 6 to 12 alternator conversion

I used a Napa pn 13-4010 alternator,I wired it according to some info found on web.It burned up in two minutes was charging when it first started.I checked all wiring no shorts anywhere.
All I can think of is the direction I am turning the alternator.

Any advice Pete

Did you change from positive ground to negative? If you did not change the grounging system, the diodes will be forward biased and burn up the alternator.

Pete,
You could possibly have a bad Ammeter and it backfed the Alternator which blew the diodes right out of it. OR, you have a dead short in your wiring somewhere. When wiring for 12V, always protect the Alternator battery stud with a 14 ga. fuse link if using the normal size 10 ga. wire. This protects the Alternator from something like what happened to you. Anytime you want to use a fuselink, rule of thumb is 2 sizes smaller than the gauge wire in the circuit. It is wise to use a Voltmeter for safety and reliable charging. Direction of rotation is not the problem, for sure. Alternators don't care.

what is NAPA 4010? is this an old model DELCO alternator? You connect the big lug on the back to oone side of the amp meter, and the other side of amp meter to the positive battery terminal. there should be two spade terminals on the side of the alternator numbered 1 and 2 or R and F??? i think #2 gets 12 volts all the time, #1 should be 12 volts from the ignition switch. or do you have a different alternator? hard to burn one up unless the power lug goes to ground somewhere.
