I grew up on AC equipment. Spent alot of hours on a series 1 D15 mowing hay. I have a D14 that I am redoing, in fact it is just about done, minus the gauge for the traction booster that this site keeps jerking me around on. I was serching form project #2 and I came across a JD720D pony start in mint condition. Gauges tin 3pt, everything is in good shape except that neither engine has ran in 5 or 6 years. Even the rear tires are 60-70%. I bought it for 1850.00... a real steal in my book. I have always liked the diesel JD's of this era and I hope you die hard AC guys dont hold it against me for slipping over to the green side for a bit.You cant take the guy out of the orange, but can you take the orange out of the guy???

I've been struggling with the purchase of a 100+HP tractor for some time and even though my current fleet is all orange I did include JD for consideration. The JD dealer offered a terrific deal on a 7220 but when I told him I wanted it in orange he said that would be $1000 extra. I let the offer set and he hasn't called me back (yet). I really don't think I should have to pay that much extra for orange paint.

At the moment i have a AC model b (restored), a AC model CA (restoring), a Oliver 60 rowcrop (my truelove), and a AC model RC (in the line for restoration). I trully love my AC"s but i even have a john deere i would like (80). Even though some people like one color i think every brand has something unique that i have to have.

I AM GLAD TO SEE EVERYONE HAS GOT MY BACK ON THIS ONE. I WILL KEEP YOU ALL POSTED. I PULLED THE DIPSTICK LAST NIGHT AND THE CRANKCASE IS FULL OF DIESEL SO I AM ASSUMING THERE IS AN INJECTOR GONE BAD.

Don, congratulations. A long term dream for me is a 720 or 730 and maybe even a 4010 or 4020. I have 7 Allis tractors right now but have at least one of the other major brands including John Deere.
AC - D-17,D-14,WD-45,WD,WC,C,G
Ford - 971,8N
Oliver - 77,70
Massey Harris - 44 Special
Case - 801 Case-O-Matic
Farmall - B (just sold my M)
John Deere - MT (just sold my A)
Minneapolis Moline - ZTE (sold ZAU and G705)

I like to experience different makes and types but Allis is my favorite. I sell some but some of my Allis's will never go (WD-45, D-14 both are almost perfect).

Good luck with the John Deere - and that is a great price if you can get it going with out spending too much money and time.

My D-17 is a Series II Diesel. It was built in 1960. I've 16.9 x 28 tires on the rear. Runs great and has lots of power. What I find most amazing is the acceleration of this diesel engine. From a dead stop, you can get to full speed in 4th gear high range in about 25 feet. Tires actually break loose on the start (start in 4th low range and immediately shove to high range). I've never seen a tractor like this. All my gas tractors either ping or just stall (admit I've only tried this with two gas). It's an amazing piece of old (or new) iron.

That was the old Buda 262. Allis bought Buda in the 50's and immediately began toying around with that engine in the WD45 and then the D17. They were truly a great engine and still are. Do you find getting parts difficult?

I haven't yet (getting parts from AGCO) but the cost sometimes takes your breath away. It was $40 for the seal on the final drive unit. The one for a WD was about $15. If I can find after market stuff, the price is fine. AGCO must have a plan to make a killing on NOS parts!
