G troubles

I have an intermittent/weak spark problem. I have replaced the condensor and points several times with limited success. What do folks think about going to an electronic ignition system?

When the tractor does start it will run smooth
but quits suddenly if I go over rough ground like
crossing a dead furrow or rut; or if I let the clutch out too fast under load. Quits just like I shut it off. After that, the starter has to work real hard to crank the engine over. When I get it to start again, I have to keep the choke at 1/2 to 3/4 choked to keep it running smooth. Later it will cough, put out foul smoke and then I can open up the choke. Do you have an opinion? Carburetor?

I use this tractor in a truck farm and so am more interested in making it run than in keeping it in "original" condition although I like that too.

Try changing the Dist. cap along with the coil. Perhaps a carb kit would be a good idea too.Red

Eric,
The weak spark could mean you need to replace the coil, since you've replaced everything else. Maybe a set of plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. The electronic ignition, I think, is the only way to go. I can't seem to buy a decent set of points for my G - they are very flimsey in the arms. The sudden death problem could be the coil, or it could be that you need to rebuild the carb. For me, that is a trial-and-error task. If the starter is laboring to turn over, it could be weak too. I would clean the fuel system, and replace the coil, then try it. One item at a time, you will undoubtedly find the problem (if you can stay sane LOL).
