I took the right side final drive apart on Friday to put in a new seal. That snap ring beside the bull gear is sure a tough one to get out and darn near as hard to get back in. In my book, they say to pull out the bearing and work the snap ring through the opening. Problem was that the inner bearing required hydraulic force to move it and I couldn't use the hydraulics until the keeper was out. I got it done, but it took about 5 hours - almost all of it struggling with that snap ring. Anyone have a method for this which is quick? I used a snap ring pliers and screwdrivers to get it out and two screwdrivers to get it in. I still have the left side to do and the inner bearing is tight over there as well.

I fought with the same sanp ring when I rebuilt the final drives on my D14. I could find no other way of doing it. Like you said, I had to use the porta-power to get the shaft out, and you cant do that unless the snap ring is out. The only thing I had going is I took the whole assy. off and put it on saw horses so I was not lying on a creeper messing with the snap ring

You know, I was considering pulling the whole final drive off but decided against it. That looked like work, too. And I didn't think it would fit in my press to push out the shaft. With it on the tractor, I could push against the differential. It seems they could have come up with an easier way. If that snap ring had holes in the end, a right angle snap ring pliers would work nice. Anyway the first one is done. On to the left.

If I were doing my D-14, I might have pulled the final drive. The D-17 is a lot bigger and heavier. I did this on a WD a year or so ago and it wasn't as hard to do for some reason. The design is basically the same. Bur there seemed to be more room in the WD. Anyway, I tackle it on Thursday.
