I'm restoring a d17 motor that runs an old apple harvester. When bolting the starter in I noticed that the engaging gear seems to be engaged all the time - not like the (modern) auto starters I'm used to. Does this starter act as a generator also, so that the gear is always engaged onto the flywheel?
If that's the case, how is it wared into the solonoid? This one's got me thinking~ any help would be appreciated!

Bob, you need to look a little closer. our old D17 had a bendix on the starter. teeth beveled so they would engage, just like an auto. Unless you got something different, i think the teeth sould not be engaged when installed.
