I have just replaced the stearing wheel on my 42 Allis B, but have a question. It is sloppy on the tube like the old one. I thought torking down the nut would help. It did take out the sloppy problem but then I couldn't turn the wheel. Am I missing something in the tube or is the tube worn out? Any help would be great. ED

yeh, it sounds like the top bushing is shot, but i think you'll have to loosen the clamp at the bottom of the column and move the tube down a little if the wheel is touching the tube

there should be a bushing inside the tube about an inch from the top. this holds the shaft in the center of the tube. wheel should tighten on the shaft and not touch the tube when tight.---- you can make bushing from wood, brass, aluminum, buy something at hardware store, or have one made at machine shop. not critical, just holds it close. push it in about an inch, then glue in spot, or center punch the tube on the side so bushing can not move.
