I am looking for information on how to time this 4cly motor? flywheel marks & location , timing gear marks,magneto timeing proceedure etc.

flywheel hole is aobut 1 inch in diameter and on the left side of the bell housing. pull the front spark plug #1, and rotate the motor slowly by hand with your buddys thumb over the hole. when piston is coming up on compression you will get pressure on his thumb. now look in the hole on flywheel area and turn the last 90 degrees or less untill you see the TDC (top dead center) mark. you should also hear the magnito "snap" about the same time. if you had #1 plug in the wire and laying on the bare block you will see it spark. or take cap off the mag and see that arm is pointed at the correct plug.-- see dueys page for intermal mag stuff.

Hi Steve! Thanks for replying back! I suspected that would be the hole where i would find the timing mark, as tdc was supposed to be on the flywheel somewhere? somebody has played with this tractor before me and knew a lot less than me.
It had the wrong spark plugs (long-reach set at
.020) Tappets set between .043 & .046, carb float set too high - mag points set at .010 and it is
firing on 2 & 3 cylinders only at a 1342 firing
order which should be 1243. I think the mag is out 180 deg - I have never worked on one of these tractors before so has been quite a challenge - am quite enjoying it now that I have found help and backup - thanks again. I was new to this internet and computer stuff so hope you get this
reply. Also thanks to Yesterday's Tractor Co. I'll
let you know if I ever get this thing running right. It's a 1948 model B s# B83663 potatoe axle - thanks again!

good luck. post back if you need more help. by potato axle i assume you mean it has 34 or 38 inch rear tires instead of the standard 24. some call that HIGH CROP.

Hi Steve: - It runs but not without a lot of
frustration! I found the flywheel timing mark,
lined it up with the rotor mark in the mag window,
gas in carb, spark at plugs, and it should
run - wrong! After much head scratching and many
timing procedures later, I again removed the mag,
removed the cap, and the "expert" at the mag shop
had installed the rotor out of time by two notches on the gear drive! (Wico-HD-2500-mag)
The reason I took it there was because I wasn't
sure of the timing marks, had no books/manuals
and nobody else knew! Anyway put the mag back on,
hit the starter and away she went - runs like a
deer, purrs like a kitten. Goes to show the
importance of having a manual/instructions first.
