I have a Farmall H, sorry it"s not an Allis, but it was a gift and you shouldn"t look a gift horse in the mouth, right. Anyway, It wasn"t starting, completely dead. I brushed up all the battery connections etc. and now the starter is buzzing/kicking in, but the engine won"t turn over. I put it into 5th gear and rocked it, still nothing. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Jubba, Randy is correct. My starter on my H did what Randy described about 1 hour after I rebuilt the motor. I thought that it was totaly locked up. I freaked out and had my wife pulling me around with the truck to get it "unstuck". You know, the starter held it so tight that the back wheels would both slide as though the motor was locked up. Apart from that, if it has a mag, then just try rolling it off if you have hills like we do in East TN!

The needle and seat leaked in my H and the cylinders were full of gasoline. The starter would not turn the engine over.

And you posted this to the Allis page instead of the Farmall page, why? We'll just take for granted you think Allis guys are smarter than Farmall guys!

Jubba: I"m glad you got Farmall H. They are an excellent tractor. I"m from the IH board an couln"t resist jumping over here and checking out your problem. Your engine could very well be stuck, and you may still have eletrical problems, but a "jammed starter" will also mimick a "stuck engine" What happens is occaisionally the starter bendix jams itself outward in the flywheel teeth. this is actually quite common on old Farmalls. I unstick mine by rocking the tractor back and forth in fifth gear til I hear the starter release itself. If your tractor has not been started in awhile, you will probably have to remove the starter and either clean it up, or have it checked out. I hope it"s just a starter problem for you...You"ll love that H once you gitter" goin. Good Luck

my H does that if I try and start it when the battery is low. I take the tin strip off the starter and using a needle nose, turn the armature backward til it feels like it spins freer.

If you think the engine is stove up put a wrench on the front of the crank and see if she turns over.

Loosen up the starter alittle and see if it is back in place then place a small sheet metal shim between starter and housing. My 41 H has a 1/16 inch shim at each bolt to hold it in the right position. This may be your problem too.

Fill the cylinders with tranny fluid and walk away from it for a few days. Be sure to put the plugs back in. I did that the other day with an H that had sit for 25 plus years and it now runs good and doesn't smoke
