AC model B or C?

About two hors ago, my neighbor gave me an old AC. As far as he could remember, it is a 1947 model, but I'm not sure whether it is a model B or C. How can I tell them apart? This tractor is located in Norway and is probably one of very few around these parts.

In addition to what the others have mentioned, you can probably go to tractor photos and do a specific search for photos on either, and for the most part, the differences will be clear regarding the differences. True, some C's came with adjustable wide front ends, as did some B's, but I think that you'll find them rarer than the typical narrow front end on the C, and a "wishbone" wide front end of a B. They all did exist, and still do though. And Rod's correct about the serial numbers, and that would certainly be the surest way to tell. Good luck with that little AC.

B's came from the factory with a wide axle in front. The front wheels were set as wide apart as the rear wheels. C's came with narrow front wheels (wheels set close together) for cultivating row crops two rows at a time. Some C's may have had a factory wide front axle but not very many. If so equipped it would have had adjustment capability for wheel width, something the B did not have.

Hi Jens,

A couple of ways. A B will begin the serial number with a B and a C will begin the serial number with a C. The serial number is on the top of the transmission housing next to the gearshift lever. In addition, the steering arm that attaches to the steering gearbox will point down if it's a B and point up if it's a C. You should be able to confirm the year of manufacture using the serial number and following the links to the left on this page under "Research & Info".

ssteering rod from the gear box arm--- on a B it goes to the left front wheel king pipn. on a C it goes to a second steering box (angle drive) under the radiator.----- ---- rear wheels total width, C is about 6 ft, B is about 5 feet.--- look how the rear wheel hub is mounted. if it has one 2 inch center nut it is definitly a B, if it has a 5 bolt pattern like a car, it could be a B, but all C have this.
