i have a 1949 model c. does the tranny, rear end and
pto pump use the same fluid? if not then what kind of fluid should i add? where do you put in the fluid for the pump? how do i check the level?
please exuse all the dumb ? iam a new owner.

Yes they do. You can use 20w non detergent or some use Hytran from Walmart.

The fill plug is on the left hand side of the transmission as you sit on the seat. There is no dip stick. You fill it until it is ready to run out of the fill hole. This fill opening fills the transmission, differential and the hydraulic pump sump. I believe it holds 7 quarts without the belt pulley and PTO, 8 quarts if you have the hydraulic pump. After it is full, start tractor, operate hydraulic pump and extend rams. Then re-check the oil level, and add as needed.

Just to weigh in, I completed the change of hydraulic oil as mentioned above on my C, but after I extended the rams, I could not get them to retract. Any idea why this would occur? They were operable before I replaced the oil.

I believe the rams are to be retracted before topping the hydraulic fluid. Otherwise your over serviced and when you try to retract the ram the fluid is trying to pressurize the reservoir and should squirt out the vent unless your vent is blocked.
