The 12V Generator on my D17 is beyond repair. Does anyone have instructions, diagrams, or advice on switching to an altenator. My tractor is 12V positive ground. Thanks much for any info provided!

Chas

Also remember when switching polarity to reverse the wires on the coil so that the neg. wire now goes to the dist. points connection and the pos. is the wire coming from the switch.Makes your coil last a lot longer and a hotter spark!

you need to convert the tractor to negative ground. to do that, switch the battery cables and switch the leads on the amp meter so it will read the right direction.---- take the generator and voltage regulator off and the two wires that go to the generator.---- the new alternator has a havy wire, maybe 10 gauge tht goes from teh lug on the back to the ampmeter terminal (same location as the B terminal on you voltage regulator went). now you need to excite the alternator with a 12 volt signal. you need 12 volt supply off the key or igniton that is hot only when turned on, and dead when key is off. this 12 volt signal goes to one of the spade terminals on the alternator. depends on waht alternator you use.--- use an alternator with an internal voltage regulator. you can use the old DELCO 10SI, or the newer DELCO CS130 off any Chevy/GM car or truck. You can use a small Japanees outfit if you want. Send me an e-mail and i will give you a diagram. hardest part is installing the alternator and aligning belt.--- [email protected]

Under the "articles" link on the left side of the page, they give instructions on how to make the change. I presume you are already using 12 volts, so that part is not applicable. You will need to convert the tractor to negative ground, but that is easy. I've not seen an up-close D-17 with alternator, so you will need to figure out how to mount it. They usually recommend the Delco 10SI alternator, but if size is an issue, you can use a small Nippendenso from a small foreign car. Wiring it is similar to the Delco. Post here and ask me how if that becomes an issue.

Does your D-17 have power steering? Mine does and the power steering is driven from the rear of the generator. Consequently, I couldn't eliminate the generator. I found a small alternator and built brackets and mounted it under the hood on the left side and left the generator. I took off one of the belts from the generator and got a shorter one to use the same shives to drive the alternator. If you get a one wire alternator, you just hook it to the amp gauge. Oh, if you are going to switch to an alternator, you must switch to negative ground. That isn't a problem. The only change necessary is changing the wires on the amp gauge - they need to be swapped. Email is open. I guess diesel or gas may be important as well. Mine is diesel.
