Hydraulic oil/transmission oil

On my 1967 AC 170 there are two oil breathers on the transmission case. The right hand one has a bayonet cap like a lot of cars used to use. The one on the left has a screw in breather a lot like the one the transmission on my Bush Hog uses.

Now, the operator�s manual shows the one on the right, the one with the bayonet cap as being for the transmission. However, it has hydraulic oil in it.

The one on the left which the operator�s manual shows as being the hydraulic reservoir has transmission oil in it. The strange crooked dipstick suggests it really is the transmission, but. . .

Is this a misprint in the manual, or ???

Oh! By the way, what is the modern equivilent for "Allis Chalmers special gear oil?"

The level indicator to the RIGHT is for the transmission/differential and should have 80w or 80-90w lube.

The one to the LEFT is for the PowerDirector and Hydraulics. 821 or equivalent non-detergent Hy-Tran fluid should be used.

The 170 is a re-tinned D17 SerIV and according to ITs AC-201 manual;
To check PD/Hyd fluid level, retract any remote cylinders, lower lift arms, run tractor at high idel (fast) for 3 minutes, shut off tractor and check fluid level with dipstick screwed in.

i dont know which is which, but at the farm store or wal mart you can get a bucket called Hydraulic- transmission fluid. it is a 20wt oil. the spec on the back for AGCO or ALLIS is 821-XL that is the new "special trans lube".
