Hi guys,

I have to admit, I hang out more on some of the other forums, but I'm sure you will still help me out with the information that I'm looking for. I've been looking for a tractor/mower for around our hobby/horse farm. This will be a second tractor, and will really only have mowing duties, and maybe occasionally pull a trailer or the like. I've recently found out about a model C Allis for sale, and it has a 6' woods belly mower on it. I would have thought that this might be a bit much, I would have thought a 5' would have been better?
Anybody have any suggestions on what to watch for when I go to look at this tractor? I don't know a whole lot about Allis stuff, but am more than comfortable with mechanical stuff. Are there hydraulics of some sort on these, or would it be a mechanical lift? I realize that this is before allis had 3pth, but for what I need that would be ok. What sort of price should I be looking at for this setup?

I have a 59" and it seems to handle it real well and would not be afraid of doing the 6 ft.. I have been known to raise the mower and cut twice in extreme conditions. Also to brag a little, I pull a Simplicity garden tractor with a tounge on the right rear and a Dixion ZTR on the left rear. Both rear mowers are a pull the pin from the seat-and rehook from the tractor seat mounting-- with a long handled pin. This allows for getting into a tight spot, pulling the pin (from the seat) allowng either or both trailing mowers to fold behind the AC C. I then jack knife the tractor when I get away from the obsicle and re insert the pin (from the seat as well). My total cutting must be done in a counter clockwise direction. This is not practical for small lawns, as it makes the total cut 11 ft 6 inches. I was forced into this by the lack of DEPENDABLE WEEKEND LABOR FORCE IN OUR AREA. This impresses many neighbors who stop their cars to observe, and some just shake their heads wondering what will come next. My usual remark to most people is WELL for the same reason--- WHY PEOPLE CLIMB MOUNTIANS? because their wives give them to much time on their hands. Dave NE IA

You are right. A 6' finish mower is a little large but it also has advantages. With a 6' cut, you can set your rear wheels so they are totally behind the mower. The C has 22 horsepower on the PTO which should be enough if your grass if it is not too long. Even then when that occasion arises, you could cut high, wait a day and cut again. I've just finished rebuilding and painting a C which I plan to use on a 5' brush hog. If it handles that Ok, I may give it a shot on the 6' as well. Most C tractors had hydraulics. If it has hydraulics, it could be used for lifting the mower. If it starts and runs good and, doesn't smoke out of the exhaust or breather and, there isn't a lot of air coming out of the breather, it should be useful. Prices on Ebay for a 5' setup usually run from about $1000 to about $1800. If it was me and the tractor checked out, I'd jump on it.
