Hello, I am looking at a 1939 Allis Chalmers Model B. My son is 10 and wants to get a tractor (he has two smaller ones: cadet 382 and a speedex s24).

The B is in fair shape, but it has a hand crank which seems dangerous to me. Can I get a kit and put a starter on this type of tractor? Is is worth it or should I try and find one with a starter?

Any info. would be helpful. Thanks, Mimi

Just get an electric start and don't waste your time fooling around with it.....

Hi mimi, Yes hand crank can brake your arm if the engine backfires. To convert to electric is kind of involved. You need to change the tork tube ( the tube between the engine and transmission), need to change the flywheel to one that has a ring gear, cut away part of the toolbox (the sheetmetal thing under the gas tank) to allow for a battery box, get a starter and wiring. I did it on a '38 B that was a parts tractor for my 14 yr. old daughter. I added foot brakes also.
