D-17 Series II hydraulics and brakes

I. My hydraulic fluid was going from the pump to the differential case. That meant either a bad hose in the differential or a bad cylinder. After disassembly, I removed the hose and hooked it up to my air compressor with 125 psi air. Absolutely no evidence of an air leak. I pulled the piston out of the cylinder and examined the rings and the piston and the cylinder. The piston was very smooth with no imperfections. The same was true for the cylinder. The o-ring was decomposing with pieces of it missing. There was only one backup ring and it was distorted. No evidence of backup ring number 2 or the pieces missing from the o-ring. My analysis says the hose, cylinder, piston are OK. The only problem is the o-ring and the back up rings. Am I right on this?????

II. I've tried to remove the cursed lower pin to redo the brake linings twice. Each time, after hours and hours, I gave up. Today, I removed the rear wheel and then took an engine hoist to remove the axle. Once the axel moved away from the differential 1/2", the pin came out effortlessly! It seems like a lot of work to remove the pin but that drilling and tapping or welding plan probably takes as much or more time. This only took about 20 minutes. In addition, I didn't do any further damage to the pin. The only bad thing about the experience is that the linings were about 80% - adjustment would have been sufficient - put in the new linings anyway.

I. If it's re-assembled and working OK, then it probably is the bad O'ring and backup ring.
However, 125psi is very low pressure for checking the hose. It's subjected to 3500psi gauge and may even peak a little higher in use.

II. Brake anchor pins can be a BEAR !!
Put on some anit-sieze when re-insalling.

Thanks for the reply, Gatz. I'm going to plumb this hose up to my D-14 before putting it back together. You are right - too big a project to not be sure before reassembly.
