Look at the engine serial number on the left side of the block near the carburetor. A WD45 engine will start with 45-#####. A D17 engine will have 17-#####. An engine out of the Gleaner E combine will also be 17-##### but on the right hand side of the block near the oil filter there will be a hole where a fuel pump was mounted. (The pump runs off a cam on the camshaft.) Most of the time there is a homemade plate there when the combine engine is put in the tractor. Both the D17 and combine engines have the reinforcing ridge around the outside of the block toward the bottom. The 45 block lacks this.
