I found a wd45 that I want to look at but found out that the tractor was an earlier model w/o power steering. Can this be added, and is it expensive? Other than that the price seems right ($1,800), and the overall condition sounds good. (I haven"t looked at it yet, but called to get the details) Any imput from the experts on this list would be greatly appreciated!

Jon, I have a complete Char-Lynn power steering assembly for the WD and WD45 Allis Chalmers tractors. $600 plus shipping.

Yes it can be added. Have 2 45's with Charlynn units and 1 with factory ps.

1 charlynn came off another 45 so mounting it was fairly easy. Second Charlynn came off a farmall so I had to make the brackets. Had the first to copy but it was still a fair project. Wouldn't even attempt it without another to copy. The Charlynn motors are available for $450 but you have to come up with a pump resevoir brackets etc. Can't use the factory hyd on this tractor.

Paid $900 for the factory PS tractor at the Waukee swap meet auction a few years back. PS didn't show well (seller had to grunt to turn the wheel when asked) and the tractor had been rode hard and put up wet. Got it home rebuilt the carb and added a gallon of oil to PS and it works like a champ but leaks some. Have heard that the factory ps units can bring $700 to $1000 IF YOU CAN FIND THEM!!

I agree with Denny, it's got to be a really good WD45 to be worth $1800. Also not many WD45's had factory power steering, if you find a set up it's going to be expensive. After market PS kits were/are available, but even used ones will cost you several dollars. I've run one for years with a loader and without power steering, not worth the cost and trouble to add it to me.

If you aren't going to have a loader, I don't think you need power steering. Mine steers easy as does my WD and WC (all use the same steering box). $1800 is on the high side for price unless it is is in excellent condition.

I added power steering to my wd45 diesel. I found a generator mounted pump off of a clark fork truck and then bought a new charlynn unit total price around $450.00. I believe it was money well spent.
