Helped my SIL put a rebuilt engine in his AC Model C. A couple weeks later he found an unknown part in the box the engine came in. Not being familiar with AC tractors, I had no idea what it was. Just happened to find a picture of it on line - it is the camshaft "thrust plunger". My question is, could this have fallen out of the engine or was it something that was just thrown into the box? The engine came without the timing gear cover - used the cover from the old engine. How is this "thrust plunger" held in the cam? SIL says he can't tell from picture in shop manual. (He's 250 miles away) Engine #CE79403G

I put my CA together with out the thrust plunger and it will have low oil pressure without it. It's really an easy job to drop the front end off as a unit and remove the plate to install it. I run it after installing the plate with the front end removed and adjust the plate so the crank end seal didn't leak. good luck

I didn't notice if Dick mentioned it or not but there is a spring that goes in the front of the cam behind the plunger.

The thrust plunger can fall out if you are not paying attention. The spring is placed in the center front of the cam shaft. The tractor will run that way bur in time the cam gear will chew up rubbing in the timing cover. This plunger holds the cam back in place.

What I failed to say in the above post is that this thrust plunger has two chores to take care of. Besides holding the cam back in place it also restricts the oil in the center of the cam to allow ample oil to be sprayed onto the rods to oil the rod bearings. I never ran or took an engine apart that did not have the thrust plunger in place so I can not say for sure if it will cause the front rod bearings to get enough oil. With the cam spinning and oil running thru the center it will spray oil on the rods, just not sure it would be enough.

Thank you for the information. SIL had the engine ready to install when I got there with the engine lift, so I never seen the "thrust plunger". Guess we will tear it back down and see what we've got. I've always had Fords myself, so this is new to me.
