Hello, I am still trying to make up my mind on a tractor. I found a d17 series 4 diesel for $2600 The tractor runs great and has 3pt and alternator. It is not all original, but it runs and needs some minor work. I am in central Kentucky, and was wandering if it would be a bad idea to ship it from Louisiana. Just wanted some input on how much it would cost me. Also, the guy says he will sell the manuals with the tractor at 3000, should I go on and bid that if I do decide to get it or wait until he sells them seperately. I know these tractors are good tractors, since we had one until about 3 years ago, and I wanted to get another one. Basically, is this a wise investment in yourall's opinions? This model is my #1 choice for a project tractor, so I figured I could fix it up real nice. Also, are the series 4 supposed to have lights, this one doesn't. Just curious, wont change my opinion on the tractor since I don't use lights when baling in the middle of the day:). Thanks in advance for your input. Also, was 3rd gear a problem on this model, our old one like this never had a problem. The link below is a bid to the tractor. would this be a good tractor from what you see for me, a 15 yearold to work on and use. this model was the first tractor that i ever drove, so I really want one. Also, if anyone has one near central Ky, let me know also. Thanks

I don"t think this tractor is really going to go for that much of a bargin. You might want to check out the D-19 LP that is on ebay from Texas. It could end up selling well worth the money.

What would be involved in changing an LP to gas. Thanks

Interesting question! The fuel system of course, you would have switch tanks, fuel lines and carbs. The manual shows a different drawing for the fan and water pump, but I'm not sure if that would have to be changed or not. I thought the hood would be different but my book doesn't show it that way. I also thought the steering was a little different to get around the fuel tank, but again my book does not show that. The LP pistons are a little higher compression than the gas pistons but not so much as to cause problems I don't think. The side panels under the tanks would for sure be different, but a lot of tractors lost those over the years anyway. Looks to me like it wouldn't be much of a job to switch if a person could find a good gas tank and carb.

I haven't ever shipped a tractor but I have shipped cars. If the tractor works well and has brakes, it will cost between $500 and $800 to ship it from Louisiana to Kentucky and take about a month (maybe more). Gears can be a problem in both 3rd and 2nd. The seller doesn't mention a problem but I would be sure to ask the question of him. I see the price is over $3000 now and it might go higher. Hard to say what it will bring because for it to get max, two people have to want it. If everyone else likes their money more than the tractor, you get it cheap. Tractors haven't been selling that high on Ebay lately (my opinion) so I doubt that it will go to $4000. That ring gear change is a sizeable project.

If it's the one on Ebay right now I'm sure by the final bid it will be closer to $5000.....
