D15 Restoration Questions

Was the air intake tube orange or black?
Were the rear rims/hubs cream/silver or just cream? (if silver, what silver?)
Same for the front rims, cream/silver or just cream?
Were the dust covers on the front hubs cream or orange?
Were the ends of the rear axles cream or orange?
Was the generator orange or black?
Was the distributor orange or black?
Was the coil orange or black?
Was the deluxe seat frame orange, black, or white?

I own a D-15 Series II, 1963 vintage, so I found your post interesting. I would suggest a few things. First, look in Norm Swinford's book on A-C tractors. As I recall, there is a nice photo of a technician in a white suit pulling a corn planter on a D-15 SII. This might help answer a few questions. I would also recommend decals from Lyle Wacker (advertises in Old Allis News) when you get to that point. His stuff is reputed to be very complete.

As for decals, I've found a couple of different sets available. One of them has 16 (or was it 17) decals. I've only been able to find evidence of 10 on this tractor. After giving the tractor a good bath with a little Panther Red Hot, I am pretty sure it is original and has never been painted. So, I'm interested to see what all these other decals are. :) I did find photos of one restored 15 with an odd ball set of decals. I say odd ball because they have a series of lines running through the the words Allis Chalmers on the main hood decals. I have no idea where those came from. The decal sets I have found match the decals on this tractor, which I'm pretty sure are original. I can tell you one thing, they were a MAJOR pain to get off! Our normal methods (paint remover, decal remover, Oops, a heat gun, and/or a razor blade) wouldn't touch them at all. They sure don't make decals like that anymore. On later model tractors they come right off no problem.

Heres what's qutoed in Terry Dean's ALLIS-CHALMERS Farm Tractors and Crawlers DATA BOOK.....
Ser II had headlights on fenders. Black muffler.
Tractor painted Persian Orange #2. Grille painted Cream. Wheels are Cream, but rims are Silver.
Decals on hood are longer than Ser I.
"Series II" is labeled on sides of tank.

Not all the answers, but hope this helps...would be nice if someone posted a pic of a restored SerII.

The data book you mentioned arrived today. :)

As for the wheels, I talked with an AC dealer today and he informed me that it all depends on the year (evern within the Series II tractors). This tractor is a 1967 and has all cream front rims with cream and silver rears so that is probably how we'll put it back. The front hubs are also cream. Well, they're actually rust colored, but there's no sign they were ever orange. :)

In a few months, I'll be a "expert" on this topic. We (Dad and I) are restoring the D-15 now and we've got a D-10 setting in the yard to be restored (or re-restored, it's already been done once, but not to the owner's standards). If the owner (we're doing these for someone else) is pleased with these two, he's also going to be sending a 12, 14, 17, 19, 21, and possibly a WC with grader attachment. All to be restored to as close to original as we can get them. Our normal business is repainting tractors for local farmers and doing touch-ups of leased tractors for a local dealership. This is our first full-blown restoration job. Wish me luck. :)
