I am trying to find a complete seat assembly for a 1947 WC. Is the mounting assembly a formed pipe or is it as i have been told like several stacked pieces of flat metal banded together.

I sold 2 styled WCs about one year ago. The older one was my father's (second owner) and had not been modified from original. I believe it was a 1942. It had the banded flat seat spring and a back on the seat. I do not know the history of the later one but I believe that it was a 1948. It had the familiar tubular seat bracket with coil spring and shock absorber. It also had the seat back. Hope this helps.

My (styled) 1946 WC seat bracket has a "formed pipe or tube" with a large coil spring at the rear, under the seat and a "shock absorber". Pictures in my "WC Operating Instructions, Mantenance, and Repair Parts Illustrations" Manual show the seat support as layers of flat spring stock banded together with a single layer flat spring extending to the rear and upward to support the seat backrest. My WC seat does not have a backrest. The Manual may be older than the tractor. The manual is "Form TPL-465". It does not refer to or show a distributor in any of the pictures but does show battery, generator, starter and magneto and gives maintenance for them. Another interesting item in the Manual is on page 13, it discusses hand cranking and in figure 13 shows a picture of what appears to be the radiator shell and hand crank of a Model "B". All other pictures in the Manual are of a styled WC.

The seat with the tubular frame, coil spring, and shock absorber was an after market seat, some may have been made by Monroe. You can see them in the ads in 1940's & 50's farm magazines. The seat with the flat spring and back rest was the AC standard seat on the WC's.Most of the back rests didn't survive. My Dad's 1939 WC had the aftermarket seat while my Uncles 1941 had the AC Seat. If you would spend 8 or 10 hours a day working down plowed ground with a WC you'd understand why farmers would buy a more comfortable seat.

My Dad's 1947 WC had the formed pipe seat support with the coil spring. The 1939 had the support with several layers of steel, like my 1937 unstyled. IH tractors of the 40s also used a coil spring, but the coil ran in the reverse direction of the AC model. WC tractors, as well as WD, came only with the magneto. WD45 had a factory distributor system. Illustrations in the manuals were not always accurate. WD, WD45 books also used the hand crank picture you mention, as well as the ignition box/ammeter from the Model C.
