I have located 2 WD 45 high crops for sale and am told that less than 200 were produced. How can this be verified and what are the value of these tractors?

Most of AC High Crops were Thomson conversions - you will generally see Thomson on forgings especially wheel centers. AC sold skid units direct to Thomson and they put their own wheels / axles on. Most of the Thomsons had 21" front rims which make them near impossible to get tires for. Exception was WC which had 36" rear and 16" on wide front, but my WD had 6.00-21 front and 36" rear.

AC factory book on WC shows single front and 36" rear while WD and WD45 show 38" rears - note they used a 9 bolt center and a converter plate to 8 bolt hub on factory HC while the Thomson center bolted directly to 8 bolt hub.

Also note most of these were Distillate burners with "K" motors - supposedly that was common due to availability / cost of fuel. Same is true for IH and some others I have seen down here. Later went to diesel when that became more common.

Yes they are pretty rare unless you are in south Louisiana - but there was a truck with 5 in various condition headed up I55 Wednesday - 2 UC and I think 2 or 3 WC but not all complete.

I have paid $200 to $400 for rough not running WC or WD - mostly stuck but with plow lifts; passed on one at $800 also stuck but otherwise complete. Have seen restored UC and WD and D17 asking $2500-3000 range - all Thomsons. 45's are supposed to be rare but so are WD's - probably best source of info is Norm Swinford - he has 3 good books out there on AC. And down here, I find a lot of 45's that are really WD's that someone put 45 decals on and I have 2 45's with wrong motors - so check that you are getting what you think you have - check s/n and trans shifter config and motor S/N or config (no access plate on right side of 45's)

If they are down here in La, e-mail me and maybe I can take a look - I'm trying to accumulate info including serial numbers and details of configurations.

Hello ACEd. I've got a A/C WD45 Thompson high crop. I've got 21" on the front and 36" on the back. The tires need to be replaced. Any ideas as to where I might find them. If I can't find tires I don't know what I'm going to do with the tractor. I've considered going back to the standard tires, but I don't really want to do that. Any ideas. Thanks in advance.

Best option I have found so far is Coker Tire - look under antique and tires and Coker - they have several car type tires in 21" - I believe from Model A ford. I've seen the Goodrich in use and they look fair - just don't get the whitewall and they are pricey. Miller tire also has a 21" as I recall but its a lug type used for implements. I think original most likely was 5.25-21 or maybe 5.50-21 but my WD has 6.00-21 - both shot. Haven't gotten around to dealing with my AC HC's as I have 3 MM apart and trying to stay in 1 brand at a time. If you decide to go back to regular tires, you will have to replace front hubs as the 3 bolt hubs are monsters - probably need to go to whole front end as most direct solution. Should be bolt on and you can keep the HC axle intact. Friend butchered a D17 HC and cut and welded onto down struts to get tractor going - that was before he knew what he had. Wallace Wade in Texas may also have them but I think they are same Goodrich implement / truck tires. Let me know what you find. I left my email open if you want to talk offline. And if you decide to give up on it, let me know - I will be needing axle parts. Best. Ed

Hi ACEd,

I would like to give you a call so I can ask you some questions about AC High Crops. Can you email me your number? Where do you live?
Thanks,

Are AC high crop tractors hard to find? Does anyone know the value of a D-17 or D-19 that is complete in fair condition but not running? Which AC high crops are the rarest? Thanks for your time. Glen

First are they Thompson Conversion "cane tractors"
or genuine West Allis produced Hi-Crops. What size is the rear rubber & do they have single front wheels or high clearance wide fronts?
Any type of hi-crop will be relatively rare compared to the tractor model that they are based on.
