WD Narrow to Wide Front Conversion Question

I own a WD with a narrow front. The steering is pretty wobbly. The U joint and shaft coming from the steering wheel do not seem to be the source of the slop. It appears to be in the steering gears in the pedestal (not sure of exact term).

My question is, if I convert to a wide front, will I still have the wobble ? Or will the wide front have its own parts replacing the bad ones in the narrow front ? All of my other tractors have wide fronts, and if getting one for the WD would fix the wobbling I would spring for one.

Thanks !

One other posibility is the axle at the bottom is keyed to the vertical shaft. The axle is held in from the bottom with a bolt and set screw. If this stuff gets loose can cause the wobble you are experienceing. Might be able to to weld that assembly together to take up the slop.

If you buy a wide front you will need the gearbox which will take care of your problem. If you have a split pedastal narrow front don't throw the lower part away they are hard to come by.

Hope this isn't to muddy of a explination.

If the fixes prescribed by the others don't solve the problem, check the bearing at the bottom of the pedestal. Over time, it develops a 'scalloping' of the race. It takes a lot of beating over the years, and since it rotates very little, the race wears unevenly. If you notice more wobble on a hard-surfaced roads than on gravel or in the field, it's a likely cause. Regarding switching to a wide front- You switch the front casting as well, since the pedestal casting is different from the wide front casting.

Bob I have been told that some of that play can be adjusted out and looking at the manual I think it can. If you lookin on the backside of the pedestal where the shaft goes into the pedestal you will see a bearing carrier with a bolt on each side. There should be shims between the carrier and the pedestal and these are for adjusting the steering wormshaft bearings to "obtainfree rotation with zero end play". also " Mesh of worm gear with sector is not adjustable." This is from my service manual and I have not done this yet but I have been told this is what to do. On my WD I find that if I run the front tires a little low it almost elimantes the wobble.

Bob,
If the source of wobble is in the front end itself...the different front end will determine how much wobble you will have...all the sloppy parts should go away if the wobble is not in the steering shaft. For example, I have aa original Allis Chalmers 4 bolt wide front end for sale that has a little play in the front end itself.

I probably misspoke - there is no play in the steering shaft after the universal, but I am assuming that there is play between the shaft and the other gear in the pedestal. Does the wide front reuse or replace any of that, or does it bolt on and reuse most of it ?

You will have to replace the pedestal unless you have the single wheel front end.
