Hi Fella's,

I bought this little gem of a tractor last fall and just stuck it into the shed before the snow started. In about a month i'll be starting restoration (not running now, but not stuck). When I picked it up, the muffler that was on it was totally rotten - so I took it off. It is very different from the mufflers on my other tractors, it is completely under the hood except for a little of the pipe poking up thru. I have seen many "B"'s with a standard above the hood muffler. Can someone tell me which one is correct for a 1940 model?? Thanks!
Jeff

Jeff,
A lot of the early B's came with the underhood muffler as the other fellows mentioned. I've heard about the "exhaust in the face" problem. My B has the regular vertical muffler through the hood, and on our property we have a lot of mature cedar trees and evergreens. It is tough getting under those while mowing the lawn. I cut the stack down a bit on my B just for that reason and I can get a little tighter under the trees mowing and still not get the exhaust in the face routine. Nice machine ya got there! If you need a wiring system for that, drop us a line, be glad to help you out.... Have fun with yer' new B!

I like the under hood muffler. Nothing to hang up on tree branches. You can still buy them, new from AGCO I think, and aftermarket. Just got one. Never had much problem with exhaust in the face, I think it is more at road speed and I don't do a lot of that.

according to my parts book, engine be-43896 and up used the underhood muffler....before that just a straight pipe with the end squeezed almost closed....I 've seen the muffler new at tractor shows, and i believe other sources sells them also...The underhood muffler is known for burning the paint off the hood...some guys use foil heat tape on the inside of the hood

I bought a "39" B about 15 years ago with the original muffler on it. It was under the hood model. Then about 10 years ago I bought a NOS under the hood type from a A-C dealer. Don't know if any more are left at dealers or not these days.
It's nice to have the muffler underneath out of the way of branches etc. but fumes come back in your face.

Jeff I am working on a B also and have taken the muffler that goes under the hood off and am planning on using a regular one. If you are interested I still have the one that I would be willing to sell, it is in good shape.

Jeff, I believe what you have there is correct. I have a B using a stack through the hood right above the manifold. However, I recall that some B's had them under the hood as yours is. You should be able to look back on privious posts on the B and find it through the archives, but I'm pretty sure it's there. I do believe that yours is correct, and may even be rare these days. But as I also recall, the folks that had them also complained about hotter gas in the tanks too, because of it.
