D-12 Spin Out Wheels

I have a D-12 Series III with Spin Out Wheels. Some of the square headed bolts that lock the clamps to the spiral rails are broken off flush. Of course I can no longer get an 8 pointed socket on them to even try to turn them. Does anyone have experience with this problem? Any advice is appreciated. The bolts have been in the same position for many years with a couple layers of paint so I know I am in for a challenge.

COMPLETELY DISASSEMBLE THE WHEELS OFF THE TRACTOR STARTING WITH THE FOUR HOLDING ASSEMBLIES THEN THE SUBASSEMBLIES CAN BE REPAIRED AND NEW OR REFURBISHED ECCENTRICS AND BOLTS CAN BE INSTALLED USE NEVERSEIZE ETC. TO REBUILD WHEEL TAKE YOUR TIME AND YOU SHOUD HAVE SUCCESSS

BobD,
I am not sure my rims have nuts. I believe the square headed "bolts" thread into a clamp type nut that holds the center of the rim to the rails. It looks like I would have to drill out the studs to remove the clamps from the rails. Am I missing something or do we have the same type rims? Thanks

Get a parts manual to see how the wheels go together. There are 4 brackets bolted to the center of the wheel corresponding to the 4 rails on the power adjust rim. One of these rails has holes in it. The "locks" with a square headed pin go on either side on the bracket on this rail (one "lock" if the wheels are all the way out or all the way in, two "locks" if at an intermediate setting. The pin on the lock is threaded on the outer side of the "lock" and extends through the hole in the rail into the other side of the lock. If the head is broken on these pins, it will require an easy out or other method to unscrew it from the lock. This can probably be done just as well with the wheel assembled or disassembled. The brackets on the other three rails have an eccentric pin (cam)that is tightened against the rail except when changing settings. These eccentric pins also have a square head. To replace these pins you need to disassemble the wheel by : (1) remove wheel weights (bolted on); (2) remove wheel with rim from final drive (lug bolts); (3) unbolt the 4 brackets from the wheel center and remove bolts (2 bolts per bracket - can ususally be done before step 2, or at least break nuts free before removing wheel); (4)place the wheel and rim on a firm surface with outside facing up; and (5) drive wheel center off brackets with a sledge hammer - backets will fall off rims. This allows you to disassemble and repair the eccentric pin mechanism - the "locks" with the sheared off heads would still be attached to the rim.

I'm dealing with the same problem currently with my Series II D-12. Apparently the previous owner never adjusted the wheel spacing and the eccentric pins are rusted and gauled up something awful. I tried to adjust the wheels to mount a No. 7 mower and I broke the head off of the first one I tried. The only way to deal with them is to take the wheel off, tear it apart, clean every thing up and put it back together with anti-sieze lube. The bolts on mine were rusted up so bad that it took my father and I a day and a half just to get it apart (had to split many of the nuts). I'm currently cleaning everything thing up and painting it before it goes back together. Replacement eccentric pins are available from AGCO - they have hex heads instead of square - you can get them for $36.36 each, although list price is higher. You also want to get new snap rings for all the eccentric pins. Another source is a salvage yard. The D-10/12 wheels are the same as the CA. I know that Tractor Parts Unlimited in Bozrah, CT (they're on the web) has at least one CA in their yard that looks to have decent (not too corroded) power adjust wheel parts on it.

A further note: I put the heavily rusted eccentric pins, blocks, brackets and stops in Gempler's Rust Remover to soak. They've been soaking for 24 hours so far and it looks real promising. Looks like everything will be back to bare metal in a day or two.

Thanks guys, I appreciate your help. I have printed out the responses and will get the exploded view before I work on dissassembly. Looks like its going to take some penetrating oil, heat, easy outs and some time:-). Happy tractoring!
