I've always had an interest in the Farmall F-series and Allis-Chalmer WC. I've been trying to get my wife involved with my hobby and believe it or not she is starting to turn around. She has taken a fancy to the persian orange tractors and I need some information. She needs something small and pre 1940. She likes them all but thought you guys would know what was best (besides all of them). Did they make the B before 1940? Shoot me some models and prices on what a fixer-upper around the midwest area would cost. I know with the Farmall stuff the price changes when you leave the midwest. I really appreciate the information. I hope this will get her involved if she has her own project.

I used a 1938 B with hand brakes and crank start for 10 years. The crank start would kick back if the engine was flooded or the magneto was damp. The hand brakes work ok if you are not going too fast, I used one brake most of the time (do not over brake, the tires were not weighted which I think made things safer becaused the wheels would slide instead of causing the tractor to tip or flip up) and two in an emergency.

Welcome there is a lot of knowledge in this forum and also there is Link chalmers.com There is a lot of folks three that ya dont see here, Ive always been a HI man till I bought a CA 51 about 7 months ago Good luck nomatter what you pick for your wife,mine seems too favor the little ca she has actually got invoved with the restoration.

As far as pricing in comparison to IH, here in Western, Pa. they are generally cheaper on the average and that also seems to be the case everywhere. They are kind of a clumsy tractor to get up and down on and even to operate. I have several, but I prefer the IH stuff.

Welcome to the orange side. Lots of good folks here to help out. I would suggest a "B" model--plenty of these around, reasonable prices, even for a runner and parts are easy to come by. I believe the 1st B was introduced in '38 and it had a Waukesha engine. These are pretty rare--less than 100 made. After that year they all had AC engines. Hand brakes were switched over to foot brakes sometime after 1939. That might be one reason to go for a later model--to get the foot brake setup for your wife. The B can be setup up with cultivators, plow, belly mower and a few other implements as well. For more utility, the CA is a good choice, but they also come with a higher price.

That's a good point I didn't think about. Our 1st B is a '39 and it came with electric start. Forgot that many didn't come with the starter setup.
