D17 generator

I have a D17 series III that has a bad 12 volt generator. Front and back bearings are wore out and one brush holder is missing.
Should I try to replace it with another generator and if so where can I purchase one, or should I replace it with an alternator? I use the tractor on a small farm. More interested in reliability than in restoration.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I have a 1958 D-17 and I converted to an alternator which I bought from a NAPA dealer.It has the voltage regulator.alternator and directions for wiring included in the kit. It has never failed in 9 years.

The tractor is over 40 years old. It might be the first or second repair on the generator. Bearings are cheap, so is the brush. With labor, the repair is way under going to an alternator. You still have the original setup. My Series Three is still a regular tractor on a 400 acre farm. Why mess with modernization?

Reliability equals Alternator. I would use a Delco internal regulated unit.I just converted my Father-in-laws John Deere MT to 12 volts and used the Delco internal regulated unit. DO NOT use the cne wire units. Your tractor will trun this alternator to slow. Also the pulley from your generator will fit the delco alternator to keep the same belt. I did this a few years ago to four C-II Gleaners. Two for Dad, one for my uncle and one for me.
