I have my grandfather's 1957 diesel in my garage. My grandfather, my dad and I farmed with it for 30 years. Always have to ether it to start it, be it cold or warm outside, but it has never given any problems whatsoever in nearly 30 yrs of hard use. Price of tractor would depend on wide or narrow front, power steering or no, 3pt hitch or snap coupler. There is a website www.schmitdinc.com, Agco dealership in KS that sells a lot of older allischalmers tractors, you can look there and get a somewhat idea of use prices for this type tracor, he always has several used D series tractors as well as others for sale.

Drove one for years, they don't like to start in cold weather, if it is a series 3 or below the three point hitch is useless, it will also slobber oil out the filler spout because it is mounted to low on the engine and it is also the crank case vent. Series four was a lot better tractor, mostly because it had factory three point hitch.

A D17 Diesel is good tractor of around 50+ hp. and the amount it's worth depends a great deal on the condition and the year. A Series IV is worth more than the previous models as it had some features that the earlier ones didnt such as external hydraulic pump and industry standard 3-point (which was still considdered an option, however). They started the D17 in 1957 and ended in 1967. Obviously a tractor with few hours is going to command better prices, too. Wide fronts out-price narrow. It should have power steering. They are on the heavy side for no assist.

That said, the prices can vary widely ...anywheres from $1500 to 4,000.
If the one you're looking at is hard to start or seems to smoke alot, I'd say it was due for some engine work. Make sure the transmission is in good shape and that the PowerDirector works as it should. If you have more specifics to ask about, I or anyone on this forum would be glad to help out.

I've had a 1960 D-17 diesel since 12/94. Had quite a lot of problems when I got it and I fixed those withing a couple of months. It hasn't gave me a bit of trouble until a few months ago when I was improperly pulling a pile of trees with the blade on the back and I overloaded the hydraulics and broke a hose (I think). But that was my fault. Other than that it is a great tractor. It is really a very powerful tractor and rides good. Controls are convenient. The hand clutch is great. Twice, I've been offered $3500 for mine and declined the sale. Not that $3500 wasn't enough - I just don't want to sell.
