Can anyone out there tell me how the main shaft comes out of a Fairbanks Morse Magneto?

Depends on which model F/M it is. Assuming it's the popular "J" series, first thing to do on disassembly is remove the impulse coupler. You'll need a narrow set of jaws to pull it off the keyed shaft. Once the impulse coupler is off, the disc enclosure needs to be popped off, next the seal, another disc which will reveal the bottom of the drive bearing. There may be a shim or two in there also. Record where you took them out. There is a "hairpin" snap ring that holds the shaft to the bearing. That needs to be removed. Flip the unit over and after the cap and lower cover have been removed, remove the points, condenser, coil and steel timing gear. A "C" snap ring usually holds that in place along with the alignment pin. Remove the "C" clip, pull the gear off with a small puller, remove the 4 screws that hold the contact plate in. Remove the contact plate gently out of the mag. From there you'll need a press to press the magnetic rotor assy out of the drive bearing below. You'll want to inspect the drive bearing on the bottom because this is a problem spot. To remove the bearing a large snap ring that sits on top of the drive bearing needs to be removed.
