Allis tedder rake problems

Last year I saw an old allis chalmers tedder rake at an auction and liked the idea of tedding and raking with the same machine. I bought it and brought it home, got it greased up and running pretty quiet. Even with the basket lowered all the way, the teeth aren't close enough to the ground to get the hay. My wheels and tires have been replaced, I think they are 5-15. Are they too big? What else could my problem be? It also has two pivoting wheels, I read that the second was an option. Whenever you go more than about 5 mph, one wheel whips back and forth so badly that you have to stop. Should I just take one off? Is the rake worth messing with, or should I just look for something a little newer? Thanks for the help.

I almost hate to show my ignorance, but I don't know what a "tedder" is. From the discussion in other posts, it sounds like it might be a rake that lifts a swath up and sets it back down to help it dry or make it recoverable for combining or baling. Am I close? Thanks for teaching me!

Circa 1949-50....This AC rake would rake a swath about ten feet wide, was pto powered, but had a gearbox that had a reverse gear in it. I think it also had a low and high speed position on the shifter. Might be wrong- one of my early jobs about '53-'54 when I was about 9-10 years old was to grease it, before I got to run it. If you shifted it into reverse, (tedder) it ran the rake in reverse, and as you drove down the windrow, it ran the bars in reverse and fluffed up the hay. This rake was not like the 'rollabar' on the NH rakes and others that came out later. It did not run parallel bars and simply shove hay to the side. It was similar to earlier rakes that had more of a rotary motion to the bars, but it had four bars instead of three. If you needed to dry hay or small grain windrows, this rake would fluff it up and move it to the right rear, since the bars were running in reverse. Sometimes we would rake oats straw in road gear, especially with the 'C', which topped out at 8mph.

There are a bunch of diferent styles of tedders, but they all are designed to fluff up and spread out the hay. Their purpose is to keep the hay stirred up, so that it dries faster.

Dad had a rake like that, but without the front and rear dual wheel option. That was for raking in wetter ground. The single wheel also whips occasionally, but more like at tractor road speed. Won't hurt anything to take one off. I imagine the one that whips is not hitting the ground even with the other one. As far as the teeth to ground clearance- check the linkage and chains between the adjusting handles and the basket. Maybe that is shorter than factory. As far as wheels and tires, 5-15 might be right, I know that they were very narrow, but I don't think they would have been 14 inch in those days. Might have been under 5 inch, which would give a lower profile too. That tedder feature is nice to fluff up a windrow after a rain.
