I have an Allis "C" with a Magneto. The tractor ran last fall when I brought it home. I'm in the process of putting it back together. I'm new to magnetos. With the engine not running is the timing mark on the flywheel supposed to be at fire or center? I've seen both in old posts. Also, You are supposed to turn the magneto on it's center to move the rotor to line up with the tab in the cap. I have the mag timed on the fire mark, compression on cylinder one, and when I turn the mag the rotor just stays there. Am I doing something wrong? Any help would be great! Oh, it's a Fairbanks Morse X4B3 Mag.

It's stopping just before the timing stud because the impulse spring is loading up. Rods way works or you could turn the engine backwards.

Hi,

You can use either timing mark on the flywheel, depending on how you set up the mag prior to attaching to the engine. There are two basic methods:
1. The advanced spark position method that uses the fire mark.
2. The impulse coupling trip method that uses the center mark.

I prefer the second method and use the center mark. For a detailed desciption of the two methods, check out the FMJ links at my home page. Yours is an FMX but I believe the procedures are the same.
