Hello, I have some VERY basic questions about an AC-CA I am considering buying. 1955 Model.

Does this tractor have live Hydraulics and live PTO?

I would use it mostly to cut my 4 acres of rocks (with intermittent grass) Would it be good to run a 5 foot hog? It will also be used to maintain a gravel driveway, and pull a york rake, etc. It does have a three point conversion on it. Could someone explain the hand clutch function for me? If I bought the tractor, my first purchase would be a manual, but I would like to talk to you all first to see if this tractor can really fill my needs. I am fairly experienced with tractors, but only fords.

JMS's reply is correct. Just to elaborate on that, the hand clutch operates on the final drive (at the axles/wheels), not on the tranny or hydraulics. Maybe that will help you understand. The CA is light in the front, at least the tricycle model is. You can get weights that bolt to the bottom of the frame under the generator, etc., for about $200, and I think they are about 200 lbs. My CA pulls very well, and although I have not mowed with it, I suspect it would handle a 5 ft. mower in reasonable grass.

Bob, I used to have a CA that I used here in Texas for mowing grass. It did well with a five foot shredder (brush hog). Occasionally, I needed to use low gear but I usually went in 2nd. I sold it when I bought a D-14 which is super for the jobs but I do miss my CA - as does my wife who often did shredding with it.

Even though the CA has independent PTO, buy an over running clutch for use when shredding. With an over running clutch you can stop the tractor without stopping the shredder. You can do the same with the hand clutch but shifting using the hand clutch causes more grinding than with an over running clutch. Also, a panic stop usually means using the foot clutch which will stop the tractor if you have an over-running clutch. Without the over running clutch, the tractor will keep right on going. I drove up onto my porch one day because I went for the wrong clutch. They usually cost about $60.

With the CA, I could pick up a shredder but generally I just left the third point link off. Having the 3rd point on some shredders runs the risk of "high-centering" on uneven land.

You can't beat a CA for the small farm. Mine is a '52. When restoring I fixed the hand clutch. I have a Worksaver 3pth. The best I've seen. Handles a 5 foot Woods belly mower very well. I run a King-Kutter 5ft 3pth rotary cutter sometimes and a AC 160 5ft trailer. Does well on both. I took it to a plowing last year and it did a good job with 2 14's. Mine is wide front and I have fluid in both the front and rear tires.

Tom,
Do you have any information, litature, or where to purchase some on the hyd system for the CA. I have a 55 model with Danco belly mower and I can't get hyd system to work.

I have a 55"CA also. JMS is right about the hand clutch and hyd. If you have found one with the hand clutch working and original lever in place, bravo! Hand clutch on mine has been welded together, don"t really need it anyway. The CA will barely pull a 5ft. The front end gets real light, especially with the three point conversions. They push the implement a little further out than they should be. I just got a nice 4ft. rollins hog and it pulls like a champ. Old timer tells me that the tractor would pull the 5ft. with the original snap coupler set up.

The CA does have live- not independent- hydraulics and pto, via the hand clutch. The foot clutch stops forward/rearward motion, hydraulics, and pto. The hand clutch works by disconnecting a rear wheel from the drive system- not the same as the hand clutch on a WD, etc., but it does provide live power.
