D14 pops out of gears 2&3 what is most common reason.

What you have giong on is very typical of AC tractors for a very long time. This is the reason when you have a tractor such as your's for sale, the first question out of your prospective buyer's mouth is "Does it jump out of gear". It all stems from people shifting gears with out stopping and grinding gears.(That and a p#@$ poor shift lever interlock system)It is a little involved to replace but there are after market parts availible for some of the parts. When your as far as you need to be in the tranny there won't be a whole lot left in the housing.But don't let it scare you.If you have any questions please feel free to call or e-mail me at [email protected] and I can track down parts for you if you like.

THOSE GUYS HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD. I JUST FINSISHED PUTTING MY TRANS BACK TOGETHER ABOUT A MONTH AGO, IT WAS 4TH GEAR ON MINE. THE DOGS ON THE PINION SHAFT GET WORN FROM REPEATED GRINDINGS AND THE SHIFT COLLAR DOES NOT HAVE ENOUGH TO HOLD ON TO, THEREFORE IT POPS OUT. 4TH IS AVALIABLE AFTERMARKET, BUT THE REST ARE AGCO ONLY AND VERY EXPENSIVE. IF YOU KNOW A GOOD MACHINE SHOP, HE MAY BE ABLE TO WELD UP THE DOGS AND TURN THEM BACK DOWN, BUT THAT MAY BE COSTLY TOO. I BOUGHT A PARTS TRACTOR FOR 75.00 AND LUCKLY THE GEARS WERE GOOD IN THAT SO I DID HAVE TO SHELL OUT THE BIG BUCKS. THIS WAS A PROBLEM ONLY IN THE 14 AND 15.THE REST OF THE D SERIES DID NOT HAVE THIS PROBLEM. GOOD LUCK AND DROP ME AN EMAIL IF YOU NEED SOME HELP.;

Don, I have a D-17 that ocassionally comes out of second under very heavy loads. I agree, most that I have heard of were D-14's.

Having not seen your gears, I can only relate what I saw in a tractor that I had. The slider wasn't being engaged far enough by the forks. Through the years, the forks had worn and the gears had worn until they wouldn't stay engaged. I got a different set of forks which engaged the gear an additional 0.060" and it would stay in gear. I needed to be careful to get it all the way in but it would stay and not pop out. Since 2nd and 3rd are bad, yours will certainly take more study but I suspect a similar issue.

Those are the gears you use the most, so they wear out, real pricy to replace too, I just bought 2nd for mine, $435.55. Third gear is about the same, but you can"t just change it by itself, you have to replace the reverse slider also, its over $400. The sliding colar between 1st and 4th is over $400. I did find aftermarket 4th, for the pinon and main shaft, but nobody has the rest of them. Maby somebody else will have better info.
