Well I am working on rebuilding a sickle bar mower for my '39 B. I got a whole new set of teeth (the knives that move). The are nice and sharp compared to the rusting ones on there now.... But what to folks usally do when they put on new teeth? I was going to rivet them like original, but do I paint them? Or should I leave them bare steel and spray them with WD-40 every time I use it?

Thanks

An easy way to get the old sections off the bar is to set your shop vise wide enough to let the sections in but not the bar. Start at one end with the bar horizontal, resting on the vise jaw and the first section in the gap, point down. Now...SMACK it with a 2 or 3 lb. hammer....the rivets will shear right off.

First of all the "teeth" as you call them used to be be called knives or sections. The stationary parts points. I agree with everyone lubrication is the key. When I mowed all day, I lubed the sections with motor oil and greased anything with a grease fitting every hour. There is a lot of steel against steel in a sickle bar mower.

I never had much luck holding knives on with bolts, but I didn't have locktite either!

I use old engine oil on my C sickle bar mower, after each mowing.

We always brushed used motor oil on the sickle when we were done with it.

And before we started and usually ever hour or so. Had to keep it well greased too. And you can use bolts instead of rivits. steveormary
