Ok guys Some of you may remember early this past summer reading about my dads WD-45 after getting the head rebuilt it dropped a valve and wrecked a piston and cracked the head. Well the guy fianly got us a new rebuild head and a piston and sleeve to replace the bad one. Since then I have got it running and it seems like it is not running smooth. Some spitting and sputtering and it seems like it is just plain starved for gas. We put the 4-1/8" piston kit in it. Someone told me to drill my main jet out to the next size and that will make it run better? Should I do this? I am going to rebuild the Carb next to see if that will help. Since I am going to be in there anything I should do like drill out the main jet?
When I idle the tractor down she wants to quit just like it starves for gas.

My other question is I never serviced the rocker arms. The little arms that push down on the valve stems look like I need to regrind them. Are they suppose to be flat? How do you determine the correct shape? the book says file them? What am I suppose to do. The next thing I noticed was the rocker arms didn't seem to hit the valve stems dead on. Do any of you have this problem and if so how do you fix it? I think my spitting and spudering may be my valves are not set right casue the rockers are worn.
please help want to have this ready for spring.
Oh we did run the tractor pulling a disk for a while to break it in and it seemed to help but it doesn't have the correct power it should.
yes I did plugs, solid core plug wires, rotor cap, dist. cap, points and condensor so we can rule them out.
thanks
Chad Penny

Have you solved your problem yet. If not could you send a picture of the intake manifold? I think I know what it is, but cant be sure until I see which intake you have. [email protected]

No I will try and solve the problem this weekend.
what kind of pictures would you need? Can I just take pics with the intake right on the tractor?
What is your email adress and I will send you pics this weekend.
Chad

The intake can stay on the engine, just a picture of the side of the engine the intake is on. Send to [email protected]. I fought a similar problem on my uc for a while. It seems like fire problems or running lean, and the problem was the intake. Mine was an updraft carburator and the intake pipe went through the exhaust (a preheat that was used to be able to burn tractor fuel) you start on gasoline and as soon as your up to temp you switch to tractor fuel. The pipe will burn through in the exhaust portion of the intake and at first it will run but like it has a vacuum leak, later as the hole enlarges, it will run like a plug wire is crossed and finally it will start but not stay running. I split my manifold pressed out the old pipe and turned a new one out of stainless and pressed it in. Runs great now. Hope I can be of help. hint if you dont know if your tractor was built to use dual fuel, just look at the fuel tank. It would have a small section for gasoline and a larger section for tractor fuel. People think the small section was a reserve tank (farmers dont need reserve tanks).

Well I think you need to check your gas line. Remember that your carb is a gravity feed from the gas bowl. If your gas line is level or to low in comparison to your Carb the tractor will run rough, not get enough gas and die after starting or under load. Raise your gas line above carb starting at bowl to the carb. It should look similiar to but not as high in the middle to a horseshoe.

sounds like your plug wires are crossed, or the enrichment passages in the carb are full. have you checked timing

If your carb. is clean and adjusted right, your plug wires aren't crossed, points, cond, and plugs are ok, valves not to tight, enough fuel geting to carb and no warter in fuel. I would check the mainfold out, I had one that was sucking air. Had to have it plained to get it to seal.

If the exhaust manifold is sucking air could I not spray some either around the manifold and if the engine speeds up I have a leak? I would have the engine at an idle so that it would not speed up enough to wreck it. What do you think?

First---you Must check to be SURE the little circular spring clips are installed on the valve stems...to help Prevent any Dropped Valves...!!!

I like to gring my rocker arms on a grinder--rocking the rocker arm so it keeps the same profile that the UNworn side has.. The rocker arms are supposed to run "Off-Center"..to help rotate the valves... You should NOT have to drill the main jet on these....!!! If it is starving for fuel, the "enrichment" passages in the bottom of the float bowl are full of dirt, or a piece of dirt is blocking fuel flow. I am running that same set up and it has been in for 25 years..NO problem with getting enough fuel. To get anywhere NEAR the correct valve-clearance, you are going to have to re-surface the rocker arm faces...!! The engine's valves should sound like a "sewing Machine" when it is warmed up, at Idle..!! This set-up makes the WD-45 unquestionably a 4-plow tractor..

Sorry to jump in, but I have the same exact problem on a WD45 also. Same set up, same thing with rocker arms. Gapped them, but still doesn't run quite right. Please help anyone!!! Also need a cheap, usable carb (drill out??) Thanks everyone!!
