Having IDed the top half of a rod bearing as a potential probable cause for a knock in the engine, I am now waiting for a new set of bearings. My question is what should I lube the journal with before reattaching the rod bearing. Also where can one find the cotter pins used to retain the bearing cap nuts.

I used a lithium base grease on the rod and main bearings. I agree with the comment about the cotter keys not being special. I bought mine at the local hardware store

Hi Steve,

I haven't done my B but on other engines I've used Motor Honey as an assembly lubricant. STP probably would work similarly. Both are heavy oil additives and tend to stay in place during the assembly time much better than a regular oil film. I'd verify proper clearance with Plastigage before any lube though.

As far as the cotter pins, I doubt there is anything special about the ones used on a B (AC part #900801). They are listed as a 3/32"X3/4" pin per my parts book. They should be considered standard hardware items that are available at any decent hardware store. Or try any automotive parts store.
