I FRIEND OF MINE HAS AN M & W DYNO AND I WOULD LIKE TO PURCHASE ONE. THE PROBLEM IS CANT FIND ONE AND THEY DONT MAKE THEM ANYMORE. ANYBODY HAVE ANY IDEAS ON HOW TO DUPLICATE ONE?

Having your own dyno, while kind of cool, really wouldn't tell you as much as you might think. It seems that every dyno gives a different result, so you can't compare results from one to another. Another funny thing about dynos is that an engine that gives the strongest result may not actually perform the best in the real world. That said, I have to admit that if someone offered me one I'd sure take it.

Don,
If memory serves....I think the tractor dynos used a "water brake". And when you were testing, you closed down the port(s) that made the pump harder to turn. The HP was read off a gauge that was calibrated to convert PSI to corresponding HP.
Although somewhat simple in components, there's a lot involved in designing these mechanisms and would be hard to dulicate. Especially getting the conversion correct for the range involved. (what does one use as a standard ?)
Not to discourage, but u may want to keep looking for a commercial dyno. Maybe a dealership that is going out of business. There are numerous sites for the different kinds of dynos....water-brake, resistance electric, and mechanical. Just do a search for info.
