I own a 1951 WD. I have a very loud noise coming from the final drive trane. I know this year of wd is normal for a wining noise from the transmission. This noise is not from the transmission and gets louder if your pulling something or going up a grade. I have checked the lube for the final drive trane gears and everything is at the level it calls for. What may be the problem to look for? I have owned this tractor for approximately four years and it has done it from day one. Thanks!!

if the noise is constant, then it has a damaged bearing--- pits, gouges, etc from dirt or lack ofl ube, but has not fallen apart. if the noise is more of a click or knock once per revolution, then it might be a tooth.

Agree with steve; only that if the pinion gear has a bad/broken tooth, you'll hear it more frequently, depending on ratio of pinion to bull gear.
On my D17, (similar final drives) one side had a badly pitted outer race on the outer bearing of axle, and the opposite side had a bad outer race on the inner bearing.

They're not the easiest thing to replace, but should be taken care of.
