Have an AC model CA, had the generator rebuilt, they put a solid state cut-out on it. It worked about 15 minutes, charged excessivly. about 8amps with the switch in and about 15amps with the switch out. It quit charging and started making a noise. I took it back to the shop they kept it about 2 months. I got it back and it chages about one or two amps with switch out and discharges when lights are switched on. Anybody got any ideas?

test the generator without the coutout. take the F wire off the generator and ground to the frame.--- take the A wire and go around the cutout and run directly to the amp meter. start tractor and see if the ampmeter charges about 10-12 amps. if not, the generator is not right. if current is low, you can adjust the third brush to get 10 amps. if you gnt nothing, the generator is bad.----- ----- next connect the A wire back to the cutout and try starting again. if the cutout is good, the generator will still work.---- if all this is o.k. take the F wire off ground and connect back to light switch resistor. if things stop working then the light switch is not grounded or the resistor is bad.

Can't rightly tell ya what they did, but sounds like the third brush isn't adjusted correctly for starters. Also, make sure the headlight/charging switch is properly grounded. This controls the charging rate to the battery through the switch on the field side of the generator. Usually most repair shops will run a unit and set it to spec before it's given to the customer. Doesn't sound like that's what they did either time. We have rebuilt generators in stock. If interested, drop us a line, be happy to help you out and get yer' CA back in service.
