I am posting a message for a friend who does not have internet access. His problem is this...

An Allis Chalmers 5040 diesel yr 1980 runs well in the warm weather, but when it gets cold (well below freezing), he has problems keeping it running. It sputters enough that he can not keep it running.

He hasn't done anything yet to figure out what is wrong, we are looking for directions where to start look for problems.

This may be a little vague on the problem description, but if somebody could post up a bunch of things to look at so that I could relay this onto him, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Graem

Hi
I would start with fuel filters. It sounds like you might have water in the fuel.(woks fine when warm, crappy when cold)It's the easiest place to start. Is he running winter blend fuel or putting an additive like Power Service in his fuel?If you have questions please e-mail me at [email protected] or call me.Hope I could help.
Thanks,
:) Jerry

Thanks for the reply. I spoke to John (owner) and he reported that that there is no water in the fuel. He also replaced both fuel filter last fall and he has only put on about 20 hours on the tractor since then. Since we live in such cold weather (Canada eh), he uses winter fuel in the cold weather. He has added 2 litres of de-gel to the fuel and he put in some anti-gel in the late fall. With the problems he has had recently, he has also added 1 litre of ATF fluid as a lubricant (a suggestion from his neighbour).

Right now, the tractor runs great because the temperature is right about the freezing point. It runs clean with no excessive exhaust. He only has problems when the temperature dips below -20 celcius (-4F).

Thanks again.
