Rough start to my 48 WD

I tried to start the 48 WD the other night and it cranked until the battery went dead. It has been sitting for some time (about 3 months). I charged the battery and checked the spark at the coil wire. It is strong. I jumped the coil to make sure I had 12 volts when cranking. Still nothing. When it is cranking, I get a very strong smell of gasoline. This makes me think the problem is in the carb and the motor is flooding. During the summer, this tractor was hard to start. We would crank and crank but it would not fire. When we pulled it, it popped right off. Is there a way to diagnose the carb before I take it off for a rebuild? I took the needles out of the carb and they look good. I drained the bowl down but it did not help. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am about ready to try to rebuild the carb. (A first for me) I replaced the weights in the distributor last summer and it ran great for a while. HELP!

Have you put new points, condinsor, rotorbug,& cap on. sounds like no fire to plugs, or week fire.

Bob,
We do a lot of carb rebuilding for our customer's especially on the Zenith & M/S carbs. I've found that because these carbs are cast iron, over the years water in the fuel gets them rusty and murky down in the enrichment passages. When these things get full of muck from old fuel, water, and whatever else, these passages get plugged. Taking them apart and washing them out helps but you need to get the lower jet(s) out and clean the passages out with a probe or mechanics wire. We have a large glassbeading cabinet that I use to clean those passages out as well as all rust out of the bowls and upper lid. Once those passages are open and the emmulsion tube cleared, the engine can draw metered fuel up the carb once again. Also make sure you don't have a fuel flow restriction between the tank and the carb. If there is a restriction and fuel level is low in the carb, that will make it start tough also.HTH

Steve, will gasoline additives help prevent corrosion and muck in these old carbs since they are not used very much. If so what brands would you reccomend? BJ
