A am looking at a WD, like tractor alot, but what I fear is being a 4 speed 1st gear will be to fast. Can someone tell me what mph 1st gear is at max rpm ? This tractor has 16.9-28 tires. Thanks in advance.

The WD and WD-45 is great for baleing hay ( if that is what you have in mind)...

1st and second are good for baleing--sometimes 3rd..you can slow it down with the hand clutch in tough spots--won't hurt the hand clutch at all...

The WD is a good 3x14" plow tractor..the WD-45 is closer to a 4-14" plow tractor...

What are you going to do with it..??

You must have some good ground. In the clay around here, WDs would handle no more than 2-14s and 45s usually 3-12s, maybe 3-14s. A D-17 could handle 3-14s pretty much anywhere and sometimes even 4-14s in the "bottoms" where there is no clay.

I doubt there is ANY ground that pulls harder than good old Yellow Wax...Black Wax is as bad if it is too dry... Never had to drop out of 2nd even in these...ofcourse the plows are very well scoured.. They are a Bear to pull if they arent..!!! We believe in plowing a FULL 7" deep, too...unless the top soil is less than that.!! I usually use a dual on the Left side of each of the WD-45's... With ALL the spring shims removed from the lower hitch, they will carry the front in 2nd gear and I have to hold back on the hand clutch to keep it from kicking out in tough spots..still in 2nd.. I would say ours are pretty much average..Healthy, but average... I Love to hear them "Rip and Snort"..!!! Work ground by the light of that big Blue Flame standing on top of the muffler...!!!

not sure waht size tires are on it, but i think my manual says that it goes 1.5 mph in 1st gear. ill check tonight and repost

Not quite sure what you plan to do with the WD but, as others have said, 16.9 x 28 tires are at least 3 sizes oversize for a WD, at least 2 sizes oversize for a WD 45, and at least one size overesize for a D17. Increase in tire diameter will increase ground speed requiring more HP. If it's a worker, probably too much tire for some work like baling. If its a puller, 16.9s are probably beyond tire limits for a WD in most areas.

The Nebraska test claims the advertised speed was 2.5 mph in 1st gear with 11-28 tires being used in their test. During the test in low gear, they reported a speed of 2.18 and a 17.35% slip which would indicate no load speed at 2.56 mph. Having 16.9 rears would likely increase the speed by as much as 20% or approximately 3.0 mph.

Too fast for what? Usually plow in second. May bale in low. Maybe you are thinking of pulling. If so, you may have a point.

Governed speed is 2 2/5 mph with standard tires. Those 16.9-28 are common on a D17, and would run faster.
